Russell Thomas

Councillor Russell Thomas Russell Thomas came to Fort McMurray in the cold winter of 1996 to take a job as Program Director of CJOK. A dedicated husband and father, Russell is a fierce advocate of Wood Buffalo and the BIG SPIRIT that sets us apart from any other place on earth.

For the past 15 years he has been a strong proponent of arts, culture and festivity and the role that celebration and expression play in building quality of life. He is a graduate of the inaugural class of Leadership Wood Buffalo and credits lessons learned and relationships built through that program as the seeds that blossomed into the creation of Events Wood Buffalo, an organization that grew out of the Fort McMurray interPLAY Society, which he served as President for 15 years.

For over a decade, Russell has worked at Keyano College and has been its Director of Marketing & Communications since 2006. He believes that we can achieve so much more when we do things together. He loves Wood Buffalo. As a professional communicator, he plans to contribute to building a strong, creative, collaborative Council. He is a frequent flyer in the social media universe, a creative writer and an avid fisherman. When time allows, Russell can also be found on stage as an actor. He plans to call Fort McMurray home for many years to come as he and his wife Heather raise their two sons, Dylan and Ben.
