Assessment and Taxation Department

The Assessment and Taxation Department is responsible for annually reassessing all property within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo for taxation purposes.

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparation of annual tax rate bylaws for the collection of property taxes
  • Communication of assessment and taxation information to the public
  • Assessment and administration of the Business Revitalization Zone tax

Branches

Assessment Branch

The Assessment Branch is responsible for the annual market revaluation of all properties within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Assessments are prepared for Residential, Multi-Residential, Commercial and Industrial (oilsands plants and gas plants) properties in both the urban and rural service areas of the Municipality. Yearly, in March, the Assessment Branch mails Assessment Notices to all property owners. The Assessment Branch is also responsible for assigning school support (public, separate or undeclared) to all properties.

Taxation Branch

The Taxation Branch is responsible for the annual mailing and collection of property taxes, Business Revitalization Zone taxes, and the issuance of Taxi Licenses, and Chauffeurs permits. The Taxation Branch also collects property taxes on behalf of Alberta Education and for two seniors’ homes: Rotary House and the Ayabaskaw Home.
