Non-profit organizations 2012 Tax Year Property Tax Exemption Program

Non-profit organizations that own or occupy property may qualify for a property tax
exemption if:

• they are registered as a non-profit organization, and
• they are open to the general public on a not-for-profit basis.

To be considered for an exemption, Provincial Legislation requires an organization
to submit an application to the Regional Municipality to determine its eligibility.

Types of non-profit organizations that may be eligible for property tax exemption
include:

• sports and recreation organizations,
• ethno-cultural associations,
• fairs or exhibitions,
• organizations used for charitable or benevolent purposes,
• arts or museums,
• thrift shops,
• care and supervision of children,
• organizations promoting the English or French language.

If a non-profit organization occupies more than one property for which they wish
to seek an exemption, a separate application must be submitted for each property.
To be considered for exemption in the 2012 taxation year, the Municipality must
receive applications for exemption by November 30, 2011.
