Traffic Tips
Proper right/left turns |
A vehicle must turn from an inside lane to an inside lane or an outside lane to an outside lane. A lane change must not occur until after ownership of the proper lane has occurred, and then the lane change can occur when safe to do so. |
Merging |
A vehicle on the highway must allow the vehicle from the merge lane to enter in to traffic. The merging vehicle must merge in a safe manner. |

Yellow means stop, not speed up! |
Yes, you can earn yourself a violation ticket by driving through that yellow light when you have had the opportunity to stop. |

Left/right turn lanes |
A lane with a left turn arrow or right turn arrow only means this lane is for completing that turn only and cannot be disobeyed when convenient. Ex. Left turn lanes from Thickwood Boulevard to Highway 63 north cannot be used as a way to avoid traffic at the bottom of Thickwood Boulevard when a bridge collision occurs. |

Stop prior to entering intersecting roadway |
The law states that you must stop before entering an intersecting roadway, even if a stop sign is not posted. Whether leaving your driveway, a parking lot, or an alley, the vehicle must stop prior to entering the roadway. |

U-turns |
U-turns are illegal at traffic lights, between intersections, or where not visible for 150 metres from either direction. |

Stopping |
It is illegal to stop your vehicle on a sidewalk/crosswalk. It is also illegal to be stopped on a roadway while waiting in a drive thru line. This would be considered blocking traffic without authority under the municipal bylaw. |

Flashing red light/yellow light |
A vehicle must stop when a traffic light is a flashing red light; for example, the light at Thickwood Boulevard and Signal Road. A vehicle must proceed with caution when a yellow flashing light is emitted, such as many traffic lights overnight in Fort McMurray. When a flashing yellow is encountered, the vehicle must yield to a pedestrian at the crosswalk. |

Low beam/high beam |
Low beams must be used if there is a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction and within 300 metres of your vehicle. Low beams must be used if you are within 150 metres of a vehicle which is in front of you and proceeding in the same direction. |
Tinting |
It is illegal to have tinting installed on your front/passenger side windows or windshield. Tinting makes it difficult to see a pedestrian, especially at night. Tinting is also a hazard to vehicle occupants if in a collision. Side windows are designed to shatter into small pieces on impact. This shattering will still occur if in a collision, but the after market tint will hold many of these pieces together and create a large and sharp projectile object. |
