Victim Services FAQs

Q. What can I expect from Victim Services?
A. Victim Services will provide victims of crime and trauma with high quality support and information and appropriate referrals in order to lessen the crisis and facilitate a return to stability resulting in an improved quality of life for the victim.

Q. Where can I get help if I have been a victim of crime?
A. Victim Services Unit and/or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police

Q. What is restitution?
A. If you have suffered financial loss as a result of a crime, you may have the right to seek restitution from the offender. Restitution may also be sought from young offenders, however limitations apply. Restitution is a way for the offender to repay you for the loss you have suffered.

Q. If I tell you I have been a victim of a crime do I have to tell the police?
A. No.

Q. I have never been to court before and I have to testify. Can Victim Services help me?
A. Yes. Victim Services will prepare you and accompany you to court.

Q. Does Victim Services provide long term counselling?
A. No, Victim Services is not a counselling agency but we do referrals.

Q. If I live where there isn’t a Victim Services Unit can I still get help?
A Yes, contact the nearest Victim Services Unit.
