General Investigation Section
The Wood Buffalo RCMP Detachment has a General Investigation Section (GIS). The unit members investigate all major criminal offences under the Criminal Code and other federal and provincial laws. They work in plain clothes with unmarked police vehicles.
The unit is divided into three sections:
1. Persons Crime Unit - RCMP members investigate crimes committed against persons such as homicides, sexual assaults, and abductions. Domestic Violence Abuse Team (DVAT) - Specially trained officers specifically tasked to investigate incidents of violence in any domestic setting.
2. Crime Reduction Teams - There are three Crime Reduction Teams in place and all three work on a full-time basis. The primary focus of the teams are auto theft, safety in the downtown core and conducting specific targeted patrols throughout the Municipality.
3. Drug Unit - RCMP members conduct investigations targeting all aspects of drug trafficking and related organized crime activities. This is accomplished through an integrated approach involving measures for prevention, education and enforcement. The integrated approach includes but is not limited to the Drug Unit's participation with the Alberta Junior A Fort McMurray Oil Barons Hockey Team in a drug awareness program for the youth of this region.
