Fort McMurray RCMP History
The Fort McMurray Detachment was opened in 1913 as part of N Division, Athabasca Landing.
In 1916, the detachment was transferred to G Division, Edmonton. During the 1920s, Fort McMurray was part of the Great Slave Lake sub-district for the Alberta Provincial Police. The Fort McMurray Detachment re-opened in 1932 when the RCMP once again assumed policing responsibilities for the province.
The Fort McMurray and Fort Chipewyan Detachments were amalgamated in the summer of 2003 and they now form the Wood Buffalo Detachment. The detachment provides policing services to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) and to Wood Buffalo National Park, making it one of the largest geographic policing jurisdictions in Canada. The Wood Buffalo Detachment is led by a Superintendent and two Inspectors (Operations and Operational Support).
The RCMP’s goal is to contribute to “Safe Homes and Safe Communities”. The communities policed by the Wood Buffalo Detachment benefit directly and indirectly from strategic partnerships the RCMP develops with other law enforcement and governmental agencies with the community and across the province. RCMP support services are readily available from the Edmonton area including air services, major crimes, communications, financial and administrative support, emergency response teams and other specialized sections.
