Police Dog Services
The Wood Buffalo RCMP Police Dog Service has been serving the citizens of Wood Buffalo since 1993.
Currently, there are three operational police service dog teams and one narcotics specialty dog team. The unit is comprised of one Corporal and three Constables who are all teamed up with their respective police service dogs.
Police Dog Services are an essential support service. Each team is capable of assisting in the areas of:
- Crowd control
- Field searches
- Ditch searches
- Urban searches
- Weapon searches
- Building searches
- Small article searches
- Tracking subjects in urban or rural environments
- Retrieval
- Criminal apprehension
Each police service dog and its handler are validated in the fields of either explosives detection or narcotics detection. The Wood Buffalo RCMP Police Dog Services have the capability to carry out both explosives and narcotics searches in various environments.
The general duty police service dogs are of the German Shepherd breed. In addition, single profile dogs trained in the field of Narcotics Detection are also utilized. These dogs generally are Labradors or Golden Retrievers.
