Council approves new plan for the City Centre

(Fort McMurray, AB – February 15, 2012) – The City Centre Area Redevelopment Plan (CC-ARP) will attract commerce, residents and new developments to Fort McMurray’s City Centre, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo announced today.

The plan will help create a quality urban environment that is a dynamic place to live, work, place and retire. The plan includes MacDonald Island, the Lower Townsite and Waterways.

“The CC-ARP is a phenomenal plan that will grow our downtown into an attractive, vibrant and exciting City Centre,” said Mayor Melissa Blake. “The opportunity to develop a world-class urban centre will help increase Wood Buffalo’s profile on a global scale.”

New and upgraded infrastructure, community facilities and service projects will be planned and implemented using the CC-ARP.

“The plan recognizes the critical role that the City Centre plays in accommodating the growth of Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo,” said Dr. Samuel Alatorre, Director of Planning and Development. “It reinforces ideas that are important to this community, including sustainability and culture, and provides the appropriate setting for us to reflect our community spirit.”
