Municipality acknowledges generosity of community towards evacuees

(Fort McMurray, AB – February 10, 2012) – The response of businesses and residents in the wake of the Parsons Creek Drive fire is being applauded, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo announced today.

 

“The generosity of our residents never ceases to amaze me,” said Mayor Melissa Blake. “I would like to thank all those who have come forward with assistance for those affected by the Parsons Creek Drive fire. Their efforts make me proud to be part of this community.”

 

Laura Barnes, executive director of Fort McMurray Victim Services commented “As always, the people of Fort McMurray never fail to come through when needed or in the wake of a disaster or tragedy in the community,” 

 

Businesses and organizations that responded in the evacuation and support of the evacuees have included:  Alberta Health Services, Alberta Human Services, the AMA, Alberta Motor Products, Bylaw Services, École McTavish school staff and students, Emergency Management and Emergency Social Services, Extra Foods, Fort McMurray Food Bank, Fort McMurray Fire Department and Regional Emergency Services, Fort McMurray Public School Board, Fort McMurray SPCA, Garda Security, Jomaa's Pizza, Mark's Work Wearhouse, Pizza Hut, Praxair, RCMP, Safeway, Salvation Army, Save on Foods, Subway, Tim Hortons, Victim Services, and Volunteer Wood Buffalo.

 

Ms. Barnes also pointed out that they know that there were many other unidentified people who just showed up with food, clothing, blankets and offers of accommodations, vehicles, and more, “Of course when you are dealing with a disaster, that is the focus but we also want to acknowledge the kindness of everyone who responded.”

 

Fire evacuees who require information or support through community services, are advised to contact Neighbourhood & Community Development at 780-743-7940. For clothing requirements, evacuees may also contact the Salvation Army at 780-743-4135. A Facebook page has also been set up where Parsons Creek Landing fire evacuees can find donations. The page can be linked to through our Municipal Facebook account at www.facebook.com/woodbuffalo.
