Municipality anticipates $2.2 million in new provincial funding

(Fort McMurray, AB – December 18, 2012) – The province has accepted the municipality’s census figures for the first time in five years.

The updated population on file with Alberta Municipal Affairs will bring a range of benefits to the municipality.

“We pursued a threefold goal in conducting Census 2012,” said Dr. Samuel Alatorre, Director of Planning and Development. “We collected better data about our community, we clarified our population with the province, and we anticipate increases in per capita grant funding.”

The new official population – 116,407 – means new funding in 2013, pending approvals from provincial grant administrators:

• Municipal Sustainability Initiative: $1.7 million
• Basic Municipal Transportation Grant: $0.5 million
    o TOTAL $2.2 million

The municipality already receives approximately $15 million annually from these grants. Factoring in the increase, the municipality is expected to receive approximately $17.2 million annually beginning in 2013.
