Municipality and RCMP to create designated protest area for Torch Relay

(Fort McMurray, AB – November 4, 2009) – A designated protest area will be established for the Olympic Torch Relay, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo announced today.

The Municipality and the Wood Buffalo RCMP Detachment will allow for peaceful protests during the Olympic Torch Relay that is occurring in Fort McMurray on November 6. The protest area will be in the Pond Crescent park area and will be in effect from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m.

“The primary role of law enforcement in situations where there may be protestors is to ensure the safety and protection of everyone involved or impacted,” said Constable Ali Fayad. “By establishing a specific protest area, we are ensuring that individuals have the right to freedom of expression while also making sure the Olympic Torch Relay is a great celebration for the community.”

The Wood Buffalo RCMP Detachment reminds the public that protests must be peaceful, must take place only on public property, and must not involve acts that are otherwise unlawful.

RCMP members are also responsible to ensure the safety and security of physical property of the property owner.
