Municipality and Keyano team up for Syncrude Urban Boot Camp for Youth

(Fort McMurray, AB – July 15, 2010) – The inaugural Syncrude Urban Boot Camp for Youth will occur in Fort McMurray this summer, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo announced today.

The week-long camp will occur from August 16 to 21 and is being co-presented by the Municipality and Keyano College Theatre. The boot camp will feature ten urban arts instructors from Central and Eastern Canada, who will teach local youth the basics of urban arts. This will feature multiple dance styles, including hip-hop, b-boy, popping and house. Workshops will also relate to urban art, spoken word, and MCing.

“The Municipality is thrilled to present a world-class urban boot camp for local youth,” said Steven Bowers, Recreation Coordinator. “The caliber of the camp is something you could expect in a larger centre, so this is definitely an exciting time for youth in Wood Buffalo. We look forward to the event being extremely popular.”

“We are delighted to be to working with the Municipality on co-presenting this fantastic opportunity for our youth. The Arts Centre is going to be bustling with the energy of the participants and instructors and I’m very excited to see them showcase their talents on the Main stage,” said Alan Roberts, Director of the Theatre and Arts Centre.

The Syncrude Urban Boot Camp for Youth will be open to participants aged 11 to 17. Space will be limited, as only 100 participants will be able to attend the camp. All participants will show off their new skills during a live performance at Keyano Theatre on August 21.

The cost of the camp is $372 per participant for the week and includes eight hours of instruction per day, a camp T-shirt, food, supplies and tickets for family members for the closing night performance. Lunch, snacks and beverages will be provided. Syncrude is offering funding for youth in need of financial assistance, with details on how to apply at the website.
