Forensic Identification Services

The role of Forensic Identification Services (FIS) is varied and encompasses many areas. Forensic Identification is classified as a support service, which means that they respond to scenes after the initial investigator has attended, assessed the scene and feels that a specialist is required. The role of the FIS member is to detect physical evidence at the crime scene and record it for the investigator and the courts.

What does FIS do?

When called to a crime scene, the FIS member will conduct an examination to record and gather all physical evidence. This may include:

  • photography and video taping
  • collection of biological samples
  • detection of hair and fibers
  • examination for fingerprints and footwear impressions
  • development and collection of same
  • seizing of exhibits for further examination
  • casting footwear and tire impressions
  • recording tool marks
  • measurements for preparing plan drawings

Is it like the TV show CSI?

Not necessarily. Forensic Identification work is a very challenging and rewarding career. Unlike recent television crime shows like CSI, a crime scene does not always reveal physical evidence that leads to the identity of the suspect. However, fingerprints are the only current and readily available means of positively identifying an individual. No two persons, even identical twins, have the same fingerprints!
