Emergency Preparedness
For those visiting the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo it is important that you be prepared during an emergency situation. If you find yourself caught in the middle of an emergency call 9-1-1 and listen to local radio, television stations for forecasts and emergency instructions. In addition, it is important to be prepared for an emergency. Travelers should ensure that they have the following items with them:
- Flash light
- A three day supply of canned, packaged, or non-perishable food items for each family member, include a manual can opener
- A three day supply of drinking water for each member of the family, sealed in unbreakable containers (adults need at least one litre of drinking water a day)
- Have an emergency back up plan
- Research the area you are visiting
- Learn First Aid and CPR
- Notify family members of where you are going and when you will be back
- If you have a pet on the trip have the vaccination records with you and know where local kennels are
- Plan how your family will stay in contact if separated by an emergency. Pick two meeting places:
(1) a location at a safe distance from where you are staying; and ,
(2) a place outside the neighbourhood you are staying in case you cannot return.
- Before leaving on a trip ensure your vehicle is in good working order
- Ensure you bring enough medication required by family members for a period longer than your stay
- Carry battery-operated radio and flashlights in working order, with extra batteries
- Have a first aid kit in your vehicle
- Waterproof matches
- Alternative heat source and an adequate supply of fuel
- Have warm and waterproof clothing
- Cash and/or credit cards
- Toys to comfort and amuse children
- Pet food
- Ensure your vehicle has lots of fuel
