Fort Fitzgerald

The municipality's most northern hamlet is Fort Fitzgerald. It was originally named Smith Landing, but changed in 1915 to honour Inspector Francis Joseph Fitzgerald (1867-1911) of the North West Mounted Police. Fort Fitzgerald is 25 kms from the Northwest Territories town of Fort Smith, and 200 kms north of Fort Chipewyan.

The 30 residents of this remote community must travel Highway 5 to Fort Smith, NWT, to shop or attend school, as there are no supporting services except electricity. Even for telephone use, residents of Fort Fitzgerald must travel to Fort Smith, which is also their primary source for employment other than hunting and trapping.

An extension of Highway 5 goes further south, passing through Wood Buffalo National Park, extending as far as Fort Chipewyan as a winter road. Bus service and commercial air service are available in Fort Smith.

Alberta Sustainable Resource Development provides fire protection for the community and policing is by the RCMP. Health services are available within Fort Smith. There is no school in Fort Fitzgerald and all students are bussed to Fort Smith.
